Mother Teresa Primary & Junior School- Bura Mission
A Catholic institution managed by the Sisters of St. Joseph, providing quality Competency-Based Education in a safe and nurturing environment that inspires learners to grow academically, spiritually, and socially.
Mother Teresa Primary & Junior School is owned and managed by the
Sisters of St. Joseph of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa.
The school is located at Bura Mission in Mwatate Sub-County,
Taita Taveta County.
The school officially opened on 3rd January 2011 under the leadership
of Sr. Teresia Mutio, the first head teacher. At the time, the school
began with six pupils in Class One and two teachers: Sr. Stella
Mumbua and Teacher Faith.
Together with the head teacher, they formed the first teaching team.
The school also had one cook and one cleaner supporting operations.
The institution was established through the support of the Hermann
Marx Foundation to provide education and care for orphaned children.
It was founded in loving memory of Adelheid Rosenbaum and named
after the first Superior General, Rev. Mother Teresia Nyambura.
From these humble beginnings, the school has steadily grown in
enrollment and facilities. Today the school has 171 learners
supported by 11 teaching staff and 5 non-teaching staff.
The school now offers both Primary and Junior Secondary education
after approval to admit Junior Secondary learners on 30th January 2023.
A significant milestone was achieved in the first KJSEA class of 2025
where 10 learners joined National Schools (C1) and 5 joined
Extra-County Schools (C2).
