Short History of St. Joseph’s Girls’ Secondary School – Maungu
Foundation & Location
St. Joseph’s Girls’ Secondary School – Maungu is a Catholic private girls’ school owned and managed by the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Archdiocese of Mombasa. It is located in Maungu town, approximately 36 km from Voi and 126 km from Mombasa, along the Maungu–Kasighau road near Tsavo West National Park.
Mission & Congregation
The Sisters of St. Joseph, founded in 1929 and officially recognized in 1938, serve in education, healthcare, catechesis, and social outreach across Kenya and beyond. The school was established to provide quality education and holistic moral formation, empowering girls with knowledge, skills, and strong Christian values.
From Vision to Reality
The land in Maungu, purchased by the late Sr. Catherine Salvine, had remained idle for years. With generous support from MANOS UNIDAS, the Sisters of St. Joseph constructed the secondary school. It began in January 2011 at Bura Mission and was relocated to Maungu in May 2011 after initial facilities were completed.
Infrastructure Development
The school was significantly face-lifted through the construction of additional classrooms, dormitories, a multipurpose hall, and an administration block. Today, it has four classrooms, three dormitories, two science laboratories, a kitchen, a canteen, and other essential facilities supporting effective learning.
Academic Programme
The school has been implementing the Kenyan 8-4-4 curriculum, which is being phased out nationally by 2027. Beginning 2026, the school has transitioned to Grade 10 Senior School under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework.
Under CBE, learners will pursue pathways aligned to their talents and career aspirations, including:
• Arts and Sports Science Pathway
• Social Sciences Pathway
• STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Pathway
International Partnership & Growth
German is offered through partnership with the Hermann Marx Foundation in Germany, strengthening global exposure. Over the years, many students have progressed to higher learning institutions. The school continues to nurture disciplined, morally grounded, and socially responsible young women.
Leadership Changes at the School Since Its Inception
Since its establishment, the school has experienced several transitions in leadership, each principal bringing unique strengths and contributions to the institution’s growth. The leadership journey began in January 2011, when Sr. Theresia Apondi took up the mantle of leadership, serving until April 2011. Though her first term was brief, it marked the foundation of structured administration.
