Our Heritage & Growth

Our Story

Every great institution begins with a dream.

For Sisters of St. Joseph Makwenyeni School, that dream was born from a simple conviction—that every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a safe, loving, and dignified environment.

On 4 April 2022, the school welcomed its very first four learners. There were no large buildings or impressive facilities—just one teacher, a few determined children, and three visionary Sisters: Sr. Ann Mutuku, Sr. Emmaculate Mkakisha, and Sr. Annet, the Education Councillor.

On that first morning, the Sisters walked to school with the children carrying small gifts. The smiles on the learners' faces confirmed that something special had begun.

The need for the school had become increasingly urgent. Many young children in the community risked crossing the crocodile-infested Umba River to attend school elsewhere. Parents longed for a safe learning environment closer to home. The Sisters responded by establishing a school that would not only educate children but also protect them and give them hope.

As the school grew, another challenge became evident. Many learners arrived hungry because their families struggled to provide daily meals. Hunger made learning difficult, so the Sisters made a compassionate decision that continues to shape the school today.

On 30 August 2022, the school launched its School Feeding Programme, ensuring that no child would have to learn on an empty stomach. Parents were relieved, learners became more energetic, and enrolment increased as more families trusted the school.

Acts of kindness from friends and well-wishers strengthened this growing community. Learners from Lunga Lunga visited with shoes, food, and gifts, reminding every child that they were loved, valued, and supported.

Water was another daily challenge. Before reliable water was available, Sr. Ann Mutuku personally carried clean drinking water to the school each day. The learners affectionately called it "mineral water," a small gesture that reflected extraordinary care and dedication.

A major turning point came on 3 March 2023, when the Superior General visited the school accompanied by a couple from the United States. Deeply touched by the learners' determination and the school's needs, the visitors pledged their support. Their generosity led to the installation of four water tanks, providing safe drinking and cooking water for the entire school community.

Later that year, on 23 November 2023, the school celebrated its first graduation ceremony, presided over by Fr. Righa. Fifteen learners proudly graduated to Grade One, becoming role models for younger children who dreamed of following in their footsteps.

Growth continued steadily.

In 2024, enrolment increased to over fifty learners. The school compound was fenced to improve security, additional classrooms were constructed for Grades One and Two, and five more learners graduated successfully.

In 2025, two additional teachers joined the school to support the growing learner population. Eight learners graduated to Grade One, and preparations began for the introduction of Grade Three in 2026.

The most recent graduation ceremony attracted guests from different regions after learning about the school's mission of serving children from economically disadvantaged families. Visitors arrived with books, learning materials, gifts, and encouragement, making the celebration a joyful reminder that compassion and education have the power to transform lives.

Today, Sisters of St. Joseph Makwenyeni School serves 80 learners across Play Group, PP1, PP2, Grade One, and Grade Two.

Our journey is not measured only by the number of learners we serve. It is measured by every child who discovers confidence, hope, purpose, and the opportunity to build a brighter future.

The journey is only beginning.
